| Algonquin Power Income Fund owns this waste to energy
facility located in Brampton, Ontario. The facility processes 500
tonnes of Municipal Solid Wastes per day and produces a maximum
of 15 MW of electrical energy.
The facility is designed to incinerate non-recyclable materials,
including municipal solid waste to produce steam. Steam is used
to drive a turbine generator to produce electricity. Five integrated
operating systems are in place at this state-of-the-art facility
including:
- incinerators
- heat recovery boilers
- one turbine generator and condenser
- air pollution control systems
- continuous emission monitoring system
The Algonquin Power Energy From Waste Inc. (APEFW) facility is
designed to operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year generating
up to 15 MW of electricity. Facility emissions are closely monitored
at all times. The Facility has been very successful with its record
of staying within the regulations established by the Ontario Ministry
of Environment.
APEFW and the Regional Municipality (comprised of the cities of
Mississauga, Brampton and the Town of Caledon) have entered into
a long term "tip or pay" Waste Supply Agreement. In 2004,
approximately 65% of the total residential waste generated in the
Regional Municipality was processed by APEFW.
The electrical energy produced at the facility is sold to the Provincial
utility, under a long term Power Purchase Agreement.
