The Long Sault Rapids facility is an 16,000 kilowatt hydroelectric generating
facility located on the Abitibi River, 19 kilometers north of the
Town of Cochrane, in northern Ontario. The facility was commissioned
in April 1998. The facility is being was constructed by McNamara
Construction, a division of Tarmac Canada Inc., a Canadian general
contractor.
The facility includes a 125 metre long rock filled dam that crosses
the Abitibi River and the total head at the facility site is nine
metres. The dam has created a narrow headpond approximately ten
kilometres in length. The facility is a run-of-the-river facility
and the headpond is not utilized for storage and peaking purposes.
The powerhouse is an integrated structure, housing four pit turbine
generating units each rated at 4,500 kilowatts of generating capacity.
The electricity produced by the facility will be sold directly
to Ontario Hydro for distribution to Ontario Hydro customers by
means of a 23.5 kilometre 115 kV transmission line, which crosses
both private property and provincially owned land pursuant to easements,
right of way and land use permits.
Pursuant to the terms of the power purchase agreement, the Fund
agree to sell power produced by the facility exclusively to Ontario
Hydro and Ontario Hydro agrees to purchase all power delivered at
the delivery point, approximately 23.5 kilometres from the facility
site.
The power purchase agreement terminates 50 years from the commercial-in-service
date and may be renewed for a further term upon request by either
party on terms and conditioned to be mutually agreed.
